Easier fitness tests for recruits are no way to shore up the NYPD

NYPD cops will at all times be New York’s Best — simply perhaps quickly not the fittest.

Determined to fill positions amid a wave of cops quitting or retiring, the NYPD has relaxed fitness standards for recruits. A stable 6-foot wall was swapped out for an easier-to-climb chain-link fence, almost a full minute was added to the time restrict for the health examination and the division might scrap a rule that requires candidates to run 1.5 miles in 14:21 minutes.

The result’s simple to foretell: Much less match cops to confront the thieves and thugs. Extra of the dangerous guys getting away. And, after all, but extra crime.
