The founders of AphroChic journal, husband-and-wife group Bryan Mason and Jeanine Hays, sat down with BOH’s Kaitlin Petersen to talk about their second ebook, AphroChic: Celebrating the Legacy of the Black Household House. In a wide-ranging dialogue, the pair defined why they needed their new tome to transcend a showcase of lovely houses and discover the journey of the Black household in America. To that finish, photos are interspersed with considerate essays on significant points together with the Emancipation Proclamation, gentrification, the Nice Migration and redlining. “We didn’t need this to be one thing that individuals might level to and say, ‘Racism is over,’” mentioned Mason. “We didn’t wish to contribute to the issue. So we tied it to a bigger story, an American story in regards to the Black household house, which is one thing that’s exhausting fought for and exhausting received.”
